Time to re-evaluate Ringo Starr?

December 17, 2013

I think so! Funny, I just had a discussion about this the other day with a friend of mine and today, I find this article. Due to all the hype and myth surrounding the Beatles it doesn’t take very long to get a distorted picture of the events, and throw in some time between then and now and it is fairly easy to mistake myth for reality. While Ringo wasn’t a flashy showman as some of his later contemporaries; Keith Moon, Ginger Baker, John Bonham etc., George Martin wouldn’t let him play on the first recording session and Buddy Rich once called him a joke (it’s ok, Buddy hated everyone!). The truth is, The Beatles actively sought out Ringo, who at the time was already playing in the biggest band in Liverpool and it was a big deal to them, to get Ringo in the band. According to George Harrison about Ringo’s debut with them on August 18, 1962 “From that moment on, it gelled – the Beatles just went on to a different level.” For them it wasn’t about being the flashiest or the showiest, it was about giving the songs life and breath all of there own, and that he did. Out of the 215 songs that Ringo recorded with the Beatles, there isn’t a bad drum perfomance on any of them. It’s time to give Ringo the credit that he is so rightfully due. The Batman Theme – Jimmy Smay

December 17, 2013

Well this about sums it all up! It just doesn’t get any better than this now does it! How come Los Straightjackets never play the beach near my house. Jimmy Smay shows what you can do with just a snare on a beach with a great surf band and a happy crowd.
